Las mazas formaban parte de los bienes de los jefes y se utilizaban en ocasiones ceremoniales especiales, sobre todo en las festividades que marcaban el fin de una guerra. Su función iba, por tanto, más allá de la de un mero arma o instrumento de golpeo: eran una expresión de rango, autoridad y reafirmación pública del orden social.
