Tanzania, Makonde Máscara femenina con pendiente labial Madera, pigmentos, chapa metálica, masa resinosa, cordón Peana Según Weule (1908), las máscaras de los makonde representan a los espíritus («midimu»). La presente máscara se identifica como de tipo femenino por el «pelele», el pasador labial. Las máscaras solían aparecer en la fase final de las ceremonias de iniciación, cuando los muchachos y muchachas recién iniciados regresaban de los campamentos en la selva a sus pueblos. Las danzas de máscaras cumplían funciones tanto cultuales y rituales como educativas.
