991 - Exquisite Saint Francis of Asissi - South Flemish or Netherlandish Gothic, late 15th Century

Exquisite Saint Francis of Asissi - South Flemish or Netherlandish Gothic, late 15th Century Oil on panel. Austere and deeply spiritual representation of Saint Francis of Assisi in an ecstatic attitude, with his stigmata visible and his gaze raised upward. The linear treatment of the face, the intensity of the chiaroscuro, and the chromatic sobriety, with a predominance of browns and ochres, reinforce the atmosphere of mystical contemplation. The composition, markedly vertical, and the expressive language recall the Flemish-based devotional painting introduced in Seville by Pedro de Campaña, to whom this work is attributed. The scene stands out for its inner strength and formal rigor, typical of 16th-century religious art. Dimensions: 91 x 71 cm unframed.
