Attributed to Vicente Carducho or Vicenzo Carducci (Florence, c. 1576 - Madrid, 1638) Oil on canvas. Dimensions: 96 x 77 cm. This work depicts Christ crowned with thorns, in an attitude of meekness and resignation, with the inscription "ECCE HOMO" in the upper left corner. The composition, of sober drama and great spiritual intensity, is characterized by the delicacy of the drawing, the paleness of the color, and the subtle treatment of the light that envelops Christ's face. The contrast between the dark background and the illuminated flesh underlines the pathos of the moment and the mystical dimension of redemptive suffering. An eloquent example of the pictorial mysticism of 16th-century Spain, in line with the spiritualized mannerism that united religious emotion with technical meticulousness.
