EXCEPTIONAL OIL PAINTING BY THE PROMINENT AMERICAN PAINTER HAROLD C. STEPHENSON, BORN IN OHIO IN 1908, AND KNOWN BY THE PSEUDONYM "ABRUZZI". CELEBRATED FOR HIS SURREALIST SCENES OF THE POST-WAR AND ATOMIC AGE, WITH SOME OF HIS WORK PRESERVED IN THE PENTAGON (VIRGINIA) AND OTHER MUSEUMS. A striking work depicting solitude and ruin, its composition is dominated by imposing ochre-toned stone structures and a small figure resembling a solitary bullfighter, its intense red cape providing a contrasting effect. (A common device in his work to emphasize isolation and mysticism.) Oil on Masonite, signed lower right, in a tall, vertical format. Dimensions: 71 cm x 23 cm.
