Entre 1956 y 1962 estudió en la Escuela Superior de Bellas Artes de Berlín, entre otros, con Georg Kinzer. Como miembro del «Neue Gruppe», Ackermann participó ya en 1963 en la Gran Exposición de Arte de Múnich. A partir de 1976/77 fue profesor en la Escuela Superior de Bellas Artes de Berlín y, posteriormente, en la Academia de Karlsruhe.
