The Golden Age of Hi-Fi and Sound Design

L ’Huillier & Associés will devote its 16 June sale to The Golden Age of Hi-Fi, bringing together an important selection of iconic audio equipment from the 1950s to the 1970s.
Spanning acoustic innovation, futuristic design and the history of sound reproduction, the sale will highlight several pieces that have become legendary among both music lovers and design enthusiasts.

Among the highlights is the iconic ELIPSON loudspeaker known as the “Religieuse”, developed between 1962 and 1966 for the sound engineers of the French national broadcasting service (R.T.F.). The result of research conducted by Joseph Léon in the late 1950s, this monophonic loudspeaker features an ovoid silhouette housing three drivers arranged to achieve a remarkable level of sound coherence and phase alignment, highly innovative for its time. Conceived as a true studio listening unit, it has since become one of the most recognisable symbols of French acoustic design of the 1960s (est. €7,000–9,000).

Three-way monophonic loudspeaker
Produced between 1962 and 1966
Estimate: €6,000 - 9,000

The sale will also feature a rare complete HELIUM sound system designed by Alain Carré, comprising a turntable, radio receiver and a pair of spherical loudspeakers. With its futuristic aesthetic, now emblematic of the 1960s, this high-end system appealed to figures such as Françoise Hardy and Serge Gainsbourg. Through its spherical forms and integrated approach to sound and furniture design, HELIUM perfectly embodies a period when Hi-Fi equipment became as much a design object as a technological innovation (est. €8,000–12,000).

Another highlight is a rare Pierre Clément acetate disc-cutting lathe made in 1953 for Guy Tavernier, a member of the Association Française pour le Développement de l’Enregistrement et de la Reproduction Sonores. Used to produce test records prior to commercial pressing, the machine offers a fascinating insight into analogue recording techniques at a time when sound engineering was undergoing major developments. Preserved together with its original valve amplifier and cutting head, it stands as a rare survivor from the early days of modern audio engineering (est. €11,000–15,000).
