Precious Objects and 18th-Century Refinement: An Eclectic Sale at Euvrard & Fabre

E uvrard & Fabre will present, on 17 April, its sale Ancient and Collectors’ Coins – Jewellery – Silverware – Tobacciana, featuring an exceptional group of gold objets de vitrine. These highly refined pieces have fascinated connoisseurs from the golden age of Parisian goldsmithing in the 18th century through to the present day.

At the heart of the sale, four boxes from a private collection of 18th-century objects stand out in particular. Three of them are polychrome gold sweetmeat boxes produced by the finest Parisian workshops of the late Ancien Régime. These circular boxes, with removable lids finely engine-turned with roundels, florets, rosettes and cord motifs, brilliantly illustrate the neoclassical decorative vocabulary then flourishing in the capital.

Polychrome gold drageoir ≥ 750‰,
of round form, the removable lid guilloché with besants and fleurettes surrounded
by a vegetal frieze,
circa 1785, by Charles Joachim Benjamin Dallemagne
Estimate: €8,000 - 10,000

True masterpieces of craftsmanship, they bear the marks of identified master goldsmiths: Charles Joachim Benjamin Dallemagne (circa 1785, lot 125, estimated at €8,000–10,000), Louis François Maucuy (circa 1782–1789, lot 123, estimated at €6,000–8,000) and Philippe Bourlier (circa 1788, lot 122, estimated at €6,000–8,000). One retains its original morocco and green velvet case, its lid adorned with a finely chased medallion featuring attributes of love—quiver, garlands and flowers—motifs characteristic of the Louis XVI taste.

The final box, created around 1950, reflects the mid-20th-century taste for elegant vanity accessories: a sumptuous two-tone gold powder compact in the shape of a purse, chased with floral and foliate motifs, its clasp set with diamonds and red stones. Estimated at €6,000–8,000, it combines lipstick holder, mirror and powder compartment with sieve in a single object, uniting discreet luxury with functionality.

The remainder of the sale reflects the breadth of the catalogue, bringing together ancient and collectors’ coins, jewellery and silverware. Among the notable pieces are an 18-carat white gold solitaire ring (lot 67, estimated at €4,000–6,000) and an 18-carat white gold floral brooch (lot 62, estimated at €4,000–6,000), while an 18-carat gold snuffbox (lot 117, estimated at €4,500–5,500) continues the focus on refined everyday objects. The ensemble is completed by a selection of silverware, tableware and tobacciana, as well as a group of 18th-century frames, portraits and drawings, offering a rich and coherent panorama of collectors’ taste.
