A Masterpiece by Paolo de Matteis at Auction at Drouot

O n September 23, Euvrard & Fabre will auction the contents of a townhouse in Paris’s 7th arrondissement and a property in the Loire Valley, bringing together furniture, Old Master paintings, and works of art.

One of the most anticipated works is a panel titled Armida Summoning the Demons. A true masterpiece by Paolo de Matteis, it reflects the influence of his Parisian sojourns, evident in the refined, luminous tones of the enchantress. Estimated between €80,000 and €120,000, this mythological panel illustrates a subject the artist revisited many times throughout his career. The dazzling Armida, standing at the center, unfurls her charms in a flowing sinuosity revealed by the graceful inflection of her bust. Yet behind this ethereal allure lies a darker virtue: the sorceress embodies poisonous seduction and subjugation. Her feet press upon an occult ring, engraved into the ground, a testament to her demonic invocations. This work was likely conceived as part of a larger ensemble, accompanied by pendants or companion pieces.

Another highlight of the sale is an exceptional tapestry titled The Month of August or The Harvest, woven around 1661 after the Master of the Months Lucas or the circle of Bernard van Orley. Estimated between €50,000 and €60,000, it depicts lively summer activities—harvesting, sheaf-binding, and the payment of harvesters—in a dynamic and abundant composition. From the mid-16th century onward, this subject enjoyed great popularity, being reproduced several times on the looms of Brussels before spreading to those of the French kingdom. This Month of August belongs to the four-part series Lucas Seasons, of which the Cleveland Museum of Art in the United States preserves a complete set.

Finally, attention will turn to a walnut sculpture of Saint Catherine of Alexandria (est. €5,000 – €8,000), created around 1510–1520. Richly adorned with carved embroideries and pearls, it evokes the elegance of the style of Jan van Steffeswert, a master active in Limburg at the dawn of the Renaissance.
