Jacques Dauchez, Bibliophile and Passionate Collector

T he sale of the Jacques Dauchez Collection will be conducted by Auction Art Rémy Le Fur on September 18 and 19. A bibliophile and passionate collector, Dauchez built a documentary and artistic corpus that reflects both his intellectual curiosity and his friendships with some of the most singular figures of the 20th century, foremost among them Dubuffet.

Born into a lineage of notaries and collectors, Jacques Dauchez naturally turned toward the law of artistic creation. As both a defender and a friend of numerous artists, he became deeply involved in the challenges of contemporary creation.

Testifying to his privileged role with many artists, an autograph letter from Jean Tinguely, addressed to “Cher Maître Jacques Dauchez…,” illustrates the close relationships he cultivated over time (est. €4,000 – 5,000).

A documentary collection devoted to Jean Dubuffet and the Compagnie de l’Art Brut, which he founded in 1948, occupies a central place within the ensemble. The closeness between the two men was such that Jacques Dauchez became a founding member of the Dubuffet Foundation, which he went on to chair from 1985 to 2000. The highlight of this collection is a bound dossier entitled Statutes of the Compagnie de l’Art Brut (est. €8,000 – 10,000). It contains 21 typewritten signed letters addressed to Dauchez and Edmond Bomsel, along with 2 autograph letters to the notary, and correspondence with major literary figures such as Paulhan, Breton, and Michaux. This section of the catalogue emphasizes Dauchez’s dual identity as both an erudite bibliophile and a passionate admirer of modern art.

The collection also reveals his interest in the singular voices of the artistic periphery, such as that of Gaston Chaissac, represented by an Untitled painting (est. €25,000 – 30,000). A self-taught artist, Chaissac distilled his visual language to its essence: bold lines, bursts of color, and signs that take the place of words.

Finally, at the top of the estimate range, a large untitled canvas dated 1970 by Maria Elena Vieira da Silva (est. €100,000 – 120,000). The composition unfolds into a vast dark field, from which emerges a network of lines and chromatic areas, gradually revealing a nocturnal landscape — a city in negative.

Archives of Art Brut, modern paintings and singular works come together in a collection of rare diversity, reflecting the energy of a time when creation was woven through correspondences.
