René LALIQUE (1860–1945) for the "Yoko" perfume by Galeries Lafayette (1913). An extremely rare and exceptional bottle made of clear, frosted glass—blown, pressed, and molded into a cubic shape—with a curved triangular body featuring a molded decoration on one side depicting six sylphs with an almond-green patina, the other side featuring a molded decoration of scrolls and waves with an almond-green patina, topped with a square, cushion-shaped stopper featuring a molded decoration of foam with an almond-green patina. Unsigned. H. 7.5 cm Provenance: La Cité des Parfums—Coty Perfume Factory in Suresnes. On the advice and at the request of perfumer François Coty (1874–1934), René Lalique became, beginning in 1909, a master bottle designer in the luxury perfume industry. François Coty, a visionary businessman, not only developed his own perfumes and presented them in bottles designed by René Lalique but also created perfumes for the clientele of Parisian department stores. Thus, Théophile Bader (1864–1942), head of Galeries Lafayette, commissioned François Coty to create perfumes and colognes under the Galeries Lafayette brand. “Yoko,” a Japanese first name meaning “Child of the Sun,” is the name of this Galeries Lafayette fragrance, which reflects the Japonism trend that took hold in Europe beginning in the 1880s. The shape of this bottle, highly characteristic of the Lalique style, is similar to that of the “Althéa” and “Fleur” bottles created in 1911 (references C and D on page 321 of the *Catalogue Raisonné of René Lalique’s Glasswork* by F. Marcilhac, Édition de l’Amateur, 2004). This bottle shape also appears in the patent filed by René Lalique on December 16, 1911 (page 202 of the Catalogue Raisonné of René Lalique’s Glasswork by F. Marcilhac, Édition de l’Amateur, 2004).
