1424 - Goblet with hunting scenes

Goblet with hunting scenes Ibex horn, partially patinated, with brass Total height: 21 cm Chipped, parts missing Artfully carved vessels made of ibex horn combine the use of an extraordinary natural material with the tradition of representative drinking vessels. A sophisticated art of horn carving developed particularly in the Alpine region, with works often featuring hunting motifs. This goblet is adorned with a continuous relief depicting a stag and other animals—likely does or young game—against a forest landscape. The dark patina of the background highlights the three-dimensionally rendered animal forms. The lid is crowned by a fully sculpted deer head with short antler buds, likely that of a young animal. The material and decoration work together here to create a vivid expression of hunting culture.
