Figure inspired by antiquity Circa 1780 Carved wood, gilt Height 43 cm Gilding worn, finger missing, restored Sculpture in the late 18th century was characterized by a renewed interest in antiquity. Mythological figures and allegorical characters served as models in which idealized beauty was combined with notions of wisdom, strength, and virtue. The gilded wooden sculpture depicts a seated female figure wearing a helmet adorned with feathers. An artfully draped cloak lies over a tunic-like garment resembling armor; high-laced shoes complement the classical-style attire. The figure is seated on a chair-like seat and holds both hands raised. The helmet and armor are reminiscent of the goddess Minerva. An allegorical representation of a virtuous warrior is also a possibility. The flowing drapery and expressive gestures combine the repertoire of ancient forms with a decorative effect accentuated by the gilding.
