Catherine of Alexandria Circa 1700 Unglazed terracotta Height 27.8 cm Partially damaged, missing fingers Catherine of Alexandria is one of the most significant virgin martyrs in Christian tradition. According to legend, she was an educated princess who, at the beginning of the 4th century, defended her faith before the Roman emperor and convinced pagan scholars in a debate. After her execution by wheel failed, she was beheaded. As a model of spiritual steadfastness and Christian wisdom, she was particularly venerated as the patron saint of scholars and students. Her life story is shaped primarily by later legendary accounts. The terracotta sculpture depicts the saint standing on a plinth, wearing a garment designed to resemble armor and an artfully draped cloak lined with fur on the inside. The exquisite clothing underscores her royal lineage. Her right foot rests on a crowned head with an open mouth, beneath which parts of a fur collar seem to be visible. This can be interpreted as a depiction of the imperial persecutor, who is often identified as Maxentius in the iconography of Saint Catherine. The crown and fur collar emphasize his secular rank, while Catherine’s posture symbolizes her spiritual triumph over the pagan ruler. Both hands are raised; the right hand, in particular, makes a pointing, possibly argumentative gesture that recalls Catherine’s legendary eloquence. A strand of hair sweeping back over the nape of her neck enlivens the silhouette. The diadem-like headdress alludes to her royal lineage, while the armor-like robe emphasizes her combative courage in the faith. The flowing drapery and dynamic gestures lend this small Baroque figure a lively expression. Around 1700, terracotta was an important material in sculptural workshop practice. The easily moldable clay allowed for the immediate development and modification of postures, gestures, and drapery. Firing these pieces ensured that such bozzetti could be permanently preserved. In addition to preparatory models, independent small sculptures were also created, such as this piece.
