Pair of decorative candlestick angels Italy 17th century Carved wood, polychromed, gilt, and silver-plated Height 182 cm In the Italian Baroque period, candlestick angels served both as practical holders for candles and as striking elements of sacred decoration. As heavenly messengers and servants of God, angel figures accompanied liturgical ceremonies and imbued the church interior with the character of a visible heavenly realm. Arranged in pairs, they could symmetrically frame an altar or another prominent area and direct the gaze toward its focal point. Candlelight, animated figures, and precious finishes worked together to create a comprehensive Baroque interior design. Standing 182 cm tall, this pair possesses a monumental, nearly life-size presence. The angels stand on slender plinths atop additional, richly decorated bases. Gilded winged angel heads and foliage enliven their surfaces, while the rest of the finish conveys the impression of marble. Above this architectural base, the large figures display their majestic elegance. The angels are depicted in contrapposto and wear billowing, richly pleated robes. The carefully rendered folds of fabric connect their posture with a sense of movement characteristic of Baroque sculpture. Tall boots and ribbons crossed over the chest and fastened with a brooch lend their attire a slightly martial character. Large wings, attached to their backs by iron hooks, expand their silhouettes. Their long, curly hair falls to their shoulders and frames their idealized faces. High eyebrows, large almond-shaped eyes, small upturned noses, and full lips above pointed chins define their distinctive features. In one hand each, the figures hold a candlestick whose decoration is characterized by a long, ascending acanthus leaf. The volute-like curled end is reminiscent of a cornucopia; the upper socket was used to secure a larger candle. The other hand of each figure is raised, giving the pair a gesture that is both pointing and inviting. It is therefore easy to imagine them being placed on either side of an altar or an entrance to a sacred space. They could also conceivably flank a portal. As bearers of light, the angels fulfilled a practical function while also serving as representative accompanying figures whose gestures and paired arrangement structured the space and directed the viewers’ attention.
