Equatorial sundial by Johann Nepomuk Schrettegger Augsburg Early 19th century Octagonal shape with compass, folding hour scale, degree arc, and gnomon Brass Signed “Johan / Schrettegger / in / Augsburg” 5.4 x 5.7 cm Johann Nepomuk Schrettegger (1764-1843) crafted portable sundials in the time-honored Augsburg tradition of instrument making. This specimen belongs to the so-called Augsburg type: a compass is used for alignment, while the folding hour scale can be adjusted to the geographical latitude of the location using a protractor. The shadow of the gnomon then indicates the true local time. Even in the age of mechanical clocks, such instruments made it possible to determine the time based on the position of the sun. A closely related, similarly octagonal brass example by Schrettegger with the same signature is held by the Museum Victoria in Melbourne. It is dated to around 1820 and also features an inlaid compass, a folding hour scale, and a protractor (Inv. No. ST 29921).
