Emperor Joseph II, with a map Oil on canvas 91.5 x 70.5 cm, 135 x 102 cm with frame Joseph II (1741-1790), son of Maria Theresa, was Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire from 1765 and ruled the Habsburg Monarchy alone from 1780 onward. As a leading figure of Enlightened Absolutism, he sought to implement comprehensive reforms of the state, the church, and society. The portrait depicts the emperor in uniform in a three-quarter view, his gaze directed directly at the viewer. His striking features lend the portrait a distinct individual character. With his right hand, he appears to be presenting a map to the viewers, while his left hand holds a telescope; he wears a saber at his hip. These attributes emphasize his military status and can be interpreted as references to strategic planning. The emperor appears as an active ruler who personally devotes himself to the affairs of his monarchy. A frame with ornate carvings at the top underscores the portrait’s ceremonial significance.
