Nicholas POCOCK (1740–1821) & Thomas MEDLAND (1765–1833) "A View of Bastia" (Corsica). Published by Bunney & Gold; July 1, 1799. Engraving on paper, framed, under glass. 13.6 x 21.9 cm (image size). Dimensions with frame: 26.5 x 33.5 cm. Small spots, minor scratches (barely visible). The Naval Chronicle, published in 40 volumes between 1799 and 1818, is an essential source for British maritime and military history. It is also highly sought after by those conducting genealogical research. Six issues appeared each year—and were often subject to corrected reprints—by Bunney and Gold, later Joyce Gold, in London. They were then bound at a rate of two volumes per year. Printed economically, on paper of varying weights and often in very small type, the copies that have survived have been heavily consulted over the past two centuries. Today, they present significant conservation challenges and are difficult to find outside of major libraries. The subjects covered are extremely varied: accounts of battles, notices of promotions, marriages, and deaths; lists of ships with their tonnage; reports of court-martials; shipwrecks; privateers and prizes of war; biographies and poetry; notes on the latest technical innovations; as well as correspondence. Each volume also contains engravings and maps related to naval engagements and major ports, covering a vast geographical area, including Corsica.
