French school, late 18th century–early 19th century. Infidelity Foiled. Drawing enhanced with gouache. Height: 33.5 cm. Length: 44.5 cm. Visible. (Scratches). This scene highlights infidelity as perceived in the 18th century through various symbols. The chocolate pot and the two cups prominently placed on the small table are the primary symbols, as chocolate in the 18th century was a luxury item reputed to have aphrodisiac properties. Sharing it in a woman’s boudoir was not merely an invitation to conversation. The woman, reclining lasciviously and partially undressed, the overturned armchair, and her face hidden behind the drapes all indicate a romantic tryst that has been unexpectedly interrupted—especially since the dog on the right, symbolizing Fidelity, is walking away.
