Jean DUFY (1888–1964) Cityscape Watercolor on paper Signed lower right 43 x 56 cm (image size) (creases) Jean Dufy (1888–1964) was a French painter and set designer associated with the Fauvist and Cubist movements. The younger brother of Raoul Dufy, he developed a unique style characterized by a great freedom of color, fluid line work, and vibrant compositions. Born in Le Havre into a family of artists and musicians, his artistic calling was awakened in 1906 upon seeing the paintings of Henri Matisse. Settling in Paris in 1912, he joined the artistic avant-garde alongside Picasso, Braque, and Derain. Although he was drafted during World War I, he never stopped painting. In 1937, he made a major historical contribution by co-creating, with his brother Raoul, the monumental fresco *La Fée Électricité* for the Paris International Exposition. He spent his final years traveling and painting before passing away in Touraine in 1964.
