Maxime MAUFRA (1861–1918) Steamboat in an Estuary at Saint-Nazaire Oil on panel Signed lower right and dated 1890 33 x 42 cm Maxime Maufra (1861–1918) was a French Post-Impressionist painter, famous for his seascapes and depictions of the Breton coastline. Born in Nantes, he quickly abandoned a career in business to devote himself to painting. In 1890, he moved to Brittany, where he met Paul Gauguin and temporarily adopted the style of the Pont-Aven School. Upon returning to Paris in 1893, he made history by becoming the very first resident of the famous Bateau-Lavoir studio. His style evolved into a personal form of Post-Impressionism, blending a free brushstroke with the raw power of light. A keen traveler, he crisscrossed France in search of shifting skies, steep cliffs, and the movement of water. Supported by the prominent art dealer Paul Durand-Ruel, he exhibited regularly and co-founded the Salon d’Automne in 1903. Appointed Official Painter to the Navy in 1916, he devoted his final years to capturing the beauty of seascapes.
