ROBIDA, Albert. The Very Extraordinary Journeys of Saturnin Farandoul Through the Five or Six Parts of the World and Through All the Countries Known—and Even Unknown—to Mr. Jules Verne. Series 1–20. Complete collection of the 20 installments published in the year of the original release of Albert Robida’s famous adventure novel—both a tribute to and an unrestrained parody of Jules Verne—illustrated with 450 drawings, including 50 full-page color illustrations. A complete copy including the large fold-out map, which is often missing. Paris, Librairie illustrée et librairie de M. Dreyfous, n.d. [1879]. Large 8vo, loose-leaf, in a blue half-percale slipcase with a title label on the spine. 808 pages (continuous pagination), 450 drawings by Robida, including 50 full-page, colored illustrations, in addition to the frontispiece, title page, and front cover, which are also in color. Binding is fragile (split hinges), pages are frayed, with rare foxing, more prominent in the margins and on the last few pages. This edition was published in the same year as the original and is complete with all 20 installments of Albert Robida’s famous adventure novel, which he illustrated with 450 drawings, including 50 full-page color illustrations. This edition is distinguished by the notation “Prime de la Caricature” on the cover, a different title (“Le Roi des Singes”), and a large fold-out map of Farandoul’s travels “to aid in understanding the text.” A masterpiece of 19th-century literary satire, *Saturnin Farandoul* is an unrestrained parody of Jules Verne’s *Extraordinary Voyages*, as well as the adventure novels of Gustave Aimard and Gabriel Ferry. Raised by monkeys after a shipwreck, the hero Farandoul travels the world, encountering Captain Nemo, Phileas Fogg, and Michel Strogoff in zany situations. Anticipating modern science fiction stories, Robida’s inventive and exuberant illustrations make this one of the most sought-after illustrated books among fans of adventure literature. The illustrated covers of each installment have been preserved, except for the 17th installment. Complete with the large fold-out map, which is often missing. [Vicaire, VI, 1148] Copy enhanced with an in-8 booklet: Portrait & Autograph of Mr. A. Robida to Illustrate *La vie en rose* (Paris, Edmond Sagot, n.d.), featuring a portrait of Robida and a facsimile of a handwritten excerpt from *La vie en rose*. Interior is well-preserved.
