MAURRAS, Charles. La Politique religieuse. First edition, enhanced with an autographed dedication by the author and two signed autograph letters. Paris, Nouvelle Librairie Nationale, 1912. In-12 (180 x 120 mm), paperback, cover printed in black and red. LXI and 427 pages. Cover soiled and frayed, spine creased and partially detached, first flyleaf missing. First edition of one of the major treatises of the Maurrassian system. Although agnostic, Maurras defends the institutional and social role of the Catholic Church as a pillar of the Latin order and French national tradition. This copy is enhanced by a rare autograph signed by the author on the half-title page: “To Henri Vaugeois (?), my friend.” The name of the dedicatee is difficult to read, but it could be Henri Vaugeois (1864–1916), co-founder with Maurice Pujo of the Action Française committee in 1898 and a key figure in the early days of the nationalist movement. It also includes: - a signed autograph letter from Charles Maurras (2 handwritten pages in black ink on a single in-4 sheet bearing the Action Française letterhead, 14 rue de Rome, Paris). The letter is addressed to a correspondent of Action Française and is difficult to decipher due to the author’s chaotic handwriting. - an autograph, signed letter from M. de Roux dated September 2, 1930 (1 page, in-8 format, on letterhead from Épannes in the Deux-Sèvres department, with a stamped envelope addressed to Madame Hugnier d’Hertuay in Versailles). Letter concerning the proofreading and rewriting of certain passages of the text, possibly by Marie de Roux (1878–1943), a lawyer, historian, monarchist activist with Action Française, and one of Maurras’s close collaborators. Includes the errata (1 in-16 leaf on pink paper pasted onto the half-title page). Interior is well preserved.
