[MANUSCRIPT / ITALIAN POETRY]. PARINI, Giuseppe. *Il Mattino et il mezzogiorno dell'Abbate Parini* (*Il Giorno*). A beautiful handwritten copy of the first two parts of *Il Giorno* (“The Day”) by Giuseppe Parini (1729–1799), a masterpiece of Italian Enlightenment satire, in a charming contemporary Italian full calfskin binding. In-16, brown full calfskin, plain spine decorated with fillets, lyres, and antique urns with gilded metalwork, title label in red morocco leather, gilded roulette border on the covers, guilloché caps, gilded fillet on the edges, speckled edges (contemporary binding). 2 unnumbered folios (half-title, title page) and 96 handwritten pages in cursive script in black ink. In Italian. Minor scuffing, rare foxing. A calligraphic manuscript from the period combining the first two parts (Il Mattino, 1763, and Il Mezzogiorno, 1765) of Giuseppe Parini’s (1729–1799) famous poetic and satirical work, *Il Giorno* (“The Day”). Written in hendecasyllables, this great satire on the mores of the 18th-century Milanese nobility features the tutor addressing the “young lord ” (giovin signore) to instruct him on the superficial and licentious routine of his day. This copy attests to the clandestine and semi-private circulation of Parini’s poems within Italian literary salons and academies prior to the publication of the complete works and during the second half of the 18th century. A perfectly legible and carefully compiled manuscript.
