[CATHOLIC LEAGUE / CHARLES X]. Summary of the reasons that led the French Catholics to recognize our King Charles X, among all the princes in France. First Parisian printing of this pamphlet issued by the Catholic League on August 12, 1589, legitimizing the election of Charles X following the death of Henry III. Paris, Rolin Thierry, 1589. In-12 pamphlet, white cover. 21 pp., typographic mark on the title page, one running head, and 2 initials. Pages slightly yellowed with browning in the margins; a small tear in one corner of the last leaf, without affecting the text. Title annotated on the cover. First edition, printed in Paris by Rolin Thierry, of this pamphlet issued by the Catholic League a few days after the death of Henry III, who was assassinated on August 2, 1589. Although the legitimate heir under the Salic Law was Henry of Navarre (the future Henry IV), the ultra-Catholics of the League refused to allow the crown to pass to a Calvinist prince. The League therefore proclaimed Henry IV’s uncle, Cardinal Charles de Bourbon (then a prisoner), king under the name Charles X. Here, it sets forth the theological, legal, and customary arguments justifying the choice of Charles X over Henry IV, invoking the exclusion of heretics, the primacy of Catholic blood, and the interpretation of the rules of collateral succession. In excellent condition.
