[ENGRAVINGS - CONTINUATION]. LEROUX, Auguste. La Rôtisserie de la reine Pédauque. Continuation and collection of prints on Japanese paper. Paris, Édouard Pelletan, 1911. In-4, loose sheets, publisher’s folder with flaps printed in black and red, with original silk ribbons. Folder soiled and worn with tears at the spine, foxing on the specimen and in the margins of the plates (more prominent on the earlier ones). A collection comprising the Japanese-print series of Auguste Leroux’s 190 compositions for the 1911 edition published by Pelletan—all signed or monogrammed on the plate—as well as a collection of Japanese-print proofs showing the color separation of the inset plates. The illustrations, which include 17 full-page figures in color or bistre and a portrait of Anatole France dedicated to Édouard Pelletan, were woodcut by Duplessis, Ernest Florian, Eugène and Émile Froment, Gusman, and Perrichon. Included: a specimen copy of the edition (4 pages, in-4 format), illustrated with a black-and-white composition within the text and a full-page color plate. A student at the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs, then at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris in Léon Bonnat’s studio, Auguste Leroux (1871–1954) won the Prix de Rome in 1894. He exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français and was awarded a bronze medal at the 1900 World’s Fair. He taught for thirty years at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Carteret describes it as a “masterpiece by the artist Auguste Leroux. "His remarkable illustrations are woodcuts executed with consummate artistry. A book of this quality in a library puts many bold modern works to shame." [Carteret IV, 170] In fine condition.
