DUTOURD, Jean. *Le Fond et La Forme*. First edition, not for general sale, on blue parchment-like paper. A fine copy printed for Simone and André Maurois, featuring three dedications and an autograph card signed by Jean Dutourd. Paris, NRF, 1960. 2 in-8 volumes, ochre half-maroquin with corner pieces, spine with 2 broad blind-stamped false ribs, author’s name, title, and volume number gilded, gilded head, covers and spine preserved. 282 pp. and 1 f. (end of printing); 254 and 1 f. Minor marks and scuffs on the leather. First edition. For both volumes: one of 20 non-commercial copies reserved for the author, on blue parchment paper from the Dujardin paper mills, marked “l” (for Volume 1) and “r” (for Volume 2), specially printed for Simone and André Maurois. Presented in the form of a dictionary, this literary essay compiles the reflections of writer and Academician Jean Dutourd (1920–2011) on subjects as varied as war, the people, the Resistance, lies, truth, betrayal, and art. A copy from the library of Simone and André Maurois, featuring their bookplate on the inside front and back covers, engraved by Jacquin after a design by Henri Mondor and dated 1935. It includes: - a handwritten dedication signed on the half-title page of Volume 1 to Simone and André Maurois: “These 108 reflections, which are 108 messages of affection that I send to them” - a second autographed dedication to the Maurois couple on the dedication page of Volume 2: “Dear André, dear Simone, here are your names, now inseparable from one of my books. I read them on this page with pleasure and emotion. This is yet another opportunity for me to tell you how much your friendship brings me joy and how deep, in return, my affection for you is." - a signed autograph copy sent to their son, Gérald Maurois, dated December 5, 1974, on the receipt for Volume 1: “For Gérald, to whom I dedicate this—a little belatedly—for his birthday, Jean” - a handwritten, signed card to André Maurois (an in-16 card on Jean Dutourd’s letterhead, May 14, 1958, with a mailing envelope addressed to André Maurois), thanking him for the few lines of praise he had written about his book in the weekly magazine *Carrefour*: “Coming from you, such warm and affectionate praise gives me great pleasure and makes me very proud. Come back from Spain soon! With love, Jean Dutourd.” A very fine copy.
