An excellent humanist edition of Charles du Moulin’s magnum opus, in a beautiful full calfskin binding of the period. Francoforti ad Mœnum [Frankfurt am Main], published by the heirs of Sigismund Feyerabend, 1597. Folio, full brown calfskin, spine with 6 raised bands underlined and cold-stamped, gilt fleurons and title between the bands, central leafy wreath and gilt fillet framing the covers (contemporary binding). 28 unnumbered folios, 734 pages, 1 blank folio and 1 unnumbered folio, large engraved vignette on the title page, headpieces, initials, and tailpieces. Printed in two columns, title printed in black and red. In Latin. Binding rubbed and slightly worn, leather patches on the corners, edges, joints, and caps; a few foxing spots and some browned pages; a gallery in the lower margin. An important German humanist edition revised by Denis Godefroy and printed by the heirs of the famous Frankfurt bookseller and printer Sigismond Feyerabend. Nicknamed the “French Papinian,” Charles Du Moulin (1500–1566) was the greatest jurist of the 16th century. His *Commentaries on the Coutume of Paris* form the fundamental foundation upon which French civil law was built until the drafting of the Napoleonic Code. The edition annotated by Denis Godefroy is one of the scholarly versions most highly regarded by legal scholars of the Ancien Régime. A working copy belonging to a jurist or magistrate from the early 17th century, featuring dense handwritten annotations in pen on the reverse of the first endpaper (a table of legal cross-references, references to Du Moulin’s works), as well as some highlightings and annotations in the margins of the text. Handwritten bookplate on the first endpaper. A fine copy, in solid condition.
