DELATOUSCHE, Germain, and HALLÉ, Maurice. Along the Main Road and the Sunken Paths: Poems and Songs of the Beauce Region. First edition on Holland paper, featuring two signed autograph dedications. Paris-Montmartre, Éditions de la Vache Enragée, 1921. Large square 8vo, black half-maroquin bound with a gold fillet, spine with 4 raised bands adorned with gold fillets, title and author’s name in gold lettering, cover boards and spine preserved, very wide margins (modern binding). 141 pp., numerous woodcuts by Delatousche both within the text and as illustrations, some pages with musical notation. Spine and covers slightly worn, very rare and minimal foxing in the margins. First edition of this collection of poems and songs in the Beauceron dialect by Maurice Hallé, illustrated with numerous woodcuts by Germain Delatousche and published by the famous Montmartre establishment La Vache Enragée. One of 195 copies numbered on Holland paper following 5 on Japanese paper (no. 55). Beautiful autographed dedication by Hallé to “Madame de Palacios, in memory of the evenings at La Vache Enragée, Montmartre, May 10, 1921.” In 1917, Maurice Hallé, Jules Depaquit, and Roger Toziny founded a satirical weekly, “La Vache Enragée,” named after the Montmartre parades known as the “Vachalcades.” In 1921, they opened the cabaret of the same name, where another key figure in the anarchist scene was the painter and illustrator G. Delatousche. A second autograph inscription in blue ink to the writer and poet François Jean-Desthieux: “Please accept this copy as a memento of a lovely walk and conversation at Cap d’Antibes. 1931.” A lovely copy.
