[MAP - MILITARIA]. Map of the theater of war in Turkey and the Baltic Sea for use in military operations. Superb engraved and hand-colored map of the Crimean War theater (1853–1856), featuring a decorated title cartouche and a view of Saint Petersburg. Paris, Lallemand, 1854. Fold-out map (90 x 62 cm), engraved and hand-colored in the period, folded and mounted in a 12mo binding in full black percaline with an illustrated title label on the front cover. Binding rubbed; tear at the bottom of the map Large map depicting the theater of the Crimean War in Turkey, Russia, and Greece, drawn by J. B. Andrieu, then revised and expanded by Adrien-Toussaint Lallemand, geographer and engraver attached to the War Department. It is adorned with a title cartouche decorated with an allegorical figure of Victory and military attributes, as well as a view of the port of Saint Petersburg. In the lower right corner is a list of the 44 governorates of the Russian Empire. Published at the start of the Crimean War—which, from 1853 to 1856, pitted the Russian Empire against a coalition consisting of the Ottoman Empire, the United Kingdom, France, and the Kingdom of Sardinia, and which ended in Russia’s defeat, this map depicts the areas of conflict at the time, stretching from Turkey and the Black Sea to the North Sea and the Baltic Sea. A very fine copy, delicately watercolored at the time.
