CHARDONNE, Jacques. *Les Destinées sentimentales*. First edition published by Montfal. A fine copy from the library of Firmijn Van der Loo, in beautiful bindings by Jean-Paul Miguet. Paris, Grasset, 1934–1936. 3 in-8 volumes, fawn morocco, smooth spine embossed with the author’s name, title, and volume number in gilt, date at the foot, large piece of textured paper on the covers, interior edging in the same morocco with the bookbinder’s signature stamped at the foot, gilt head, cover and spine, in a bordered slipcase (J.-P. Miguet). 322 pp.; 328 pp.; 290 pp. Spines faded with brown stains on all three volumes. Very rare foxing in the margins; faint water stains in the inner margins of volume 2. First edition of Jacques Cardonne’s most ambitious novel cycle, consisting of three parts published successively between 1934 and 1936: *La Femme de Jean Barnery*, *Pauline*, and *Porcelaine de Limoges*. "This historical and intimate epic traces the fate of Jean and Pauline, a couple confronted with the upheavals of the early decades of the 20th century. Romantic and social adventures intertwine, making this love story a subtle portrayal of the bourgeois, provincial society of the great cognac and porcelain manufacturers." (publisher’s description) For the 3 volumes: one of 18 copies printed on Montval paper (nos. 6, 5, and 12, respectively), the second paper run following the initial 18 printed on Japanese paper. From the library of Firmijn Van der Loo (1913–1997), painter, poet, and member of the Société des bibliophiles et iconophiles de Belgique, with his modern bookplate pasted to the endpapers. A very fine copy in a signed binding.
