BORDEU, Théophile de. Research on the Pulse in Relation to Seizures. Paris, Pierre-François Didot the Younger, 1768. 2 in-8 volumes, full brown marbled calfskin, spine with guilloché raised bands, gilt fleurons between the bands, title label in red morocco, gilt fillet on the edges, marbled paper endpapers and half-ends, mottled edges (contemporary binding). xxx and 356 pp.; 388 pp. and 2 ff. (approval and catalog), headbands and tailpieces. Bindings rubbed, upper cap missing, and the title and volume number labels missing from Volume II; a few wormholes and brown stains on the covers; fragments of an old label on the spine of Volume I; rare foxing. Second expanded edition following the original of 1756, complete in 2 volumes. Théophile de Bordeu (1722–1776), a physician of the Montpellier school, sought to demonstrate that pulse analysis can indicate the duration, location, and probable outcome of a disease, as well as the organ to be treated, making the pulse “the physician’s sole compass.” This 1768 edition has been expanded to include research on seizures and critiques of pulse theory. Handwritten bookplate on the endpaper of Volume 1. A lovely set in uniform period binding.
