[ARCHAEOLOGY - SYRIA]. PARROT, André. Archaeological Mission to Mari. III: The Temples of Ishtarat and Ninni-zaz. Paris, Paul Geuthner (Bibliothèque archéologique et historique, vol. LXXXVI), 1967. Quarto, Bradel-bound, in the publisher’s full gray cloth. 354 pp., 1 f. (colophon), 1 color frontispiece, numerous black-and-white illustrations in the text, 84 black-and-white plates (maps, diagrams, photographic reproductions), 4 plates of color reproductions. Slight marks on the cloth. A monumental study by André Parrot, in collaboration with Georges Dossin and Lucienne Laroche, documenting the excavations of the sanctuaries dedicated to the goddesses Ishtarat and Ninni-zaza at the historic site of Mari (Tell Hariri) in Syria. It is illustrated with numerous figures in the text, plans, architectural reconstructions, and 89 plates of photographs (including 5 in color), presenting the statues, bas-reliefs, tablets, and artifacts unearthed. A renowned French archaeologist, André Parro (1901–1980) served as chief curator of the national museums and director of the Mari expedition (at the present-day site of Tell Hariri in Syria), where he discovered one of the richest palaces and sanctuaries of ancient Mesopotamia from the Bronze Age. A sturdy copy in the publisher’s binding.
