MORRIS and GOSCINNY. — Lucky Luke. The Rice Battle. PEG Publishing, 1972. Quarto, publisher’s illustrated cardboard binding; front cover in color depicting Lucky Luke and Jolly Jumper sharing a drink through two straws; white back cover adorned with a vignette of Lucky Luke. Non-commercial promotional edition, produced specifically for the TOTAL gas station network, as indicated by the text printed on the covers: “Offered by the TOTAL network” and “This album, published specifically for TOTAL, is not for sale. It is offered to you by your TOTAL gas station.” This album compiles short Lucky Luke adventures, including *The Battle of the Rice*, with artwork by Morris and stories by René Goscinny. The last page bears the following notation: “PEG Publications—Legal Deposit, 2nd Quarter 1972. Publisher No. A.001—with the special permission of the authors.—Printed in Germany by MohnDruck Gütersloh.” This publication offers an interesting glimpse into the promotional comic books distributed through petroleum retail networks in the early 1970s. Condition: Good copy. The cover’s colors are well preserved, with a few slight signs of handling and a fine scratch on the front cover. The back cover is slightly soiled, with some scuffing on the corners.
