McMANUS (George). — La Famille Illico. Volume 3: 1940–1941. Bringing Up Father. Paris, Futuropolis, n.d. Oblong in-4 album, publisher’s illustrated cardboard binding, printed spine. Black-and-white comic strip reproductions. French first edition in this format of this retrospective collection dedicated to *Bringing Up Father*, the famous American comic strip created in 1913 by George McManus (1884–1954). This collection brings together the adventures of Illico (Jiggs) and his wife Belle (Maggie) published between 1940 and 1941. Through the misadventures of this newly wealthy couple, McManus offers a delightful satire of the American bourgeoisie, social conventions, and marital relationships. Notable for the elegance of its artwork, the precision of its settings, and its Art Deco aesthetic, this series is one of the great classics of American comics. A fine copy, with a well-preserved illustrated hardcover showing slight signs of wear.
