Saint Jerome in the Desert, carved from walnut in relief and polychromed. Half-naked, the emaciated hermit saint is kneeling on a rocky background, holding a pebble in his right hand with which he struck his chest as an act of mortification; He leans on a tablet upon which rest a book and a skull; below lies the tamed lion. Spain, 16th century H. 42 cm - W. 29 cm (minor damage and restorations) The iconographic composition of this Saint Jerome kneeling against a rocky background was often reproduced by Spanish sculptors. Diego de Siloé created a striking depiction of it in a group sculpture on display at Burgos Cathedral.
