Satirical bronze relief, *Le Grand Duc Tnajueivofskyef*, France/Belgium, ca. 1930–1950, 40 x 25 cm. Unique Satirical Bronze Relief – 'Le Grand Duc Tnajueivofskyef' – France/Belgium, ca. 1930–1950. A unique, humorous, and highly decorative bronze relief panel. This object is an example of high-quality, student-style or intellectual satire from the interwar period, presumably created as a one-of-a-kind piece or an exclusive gift within a private circle. The central figure depicts a man dancing exuberantly with a prominent mustache and a turban-like headdress (a caricatured nod to a Cossack or Oriental dancer). The highlight of this lot is the cast French inscription in the lower right: “EN SOUVENIR D’UNE JOURNÉE HISTORIQUE ET PERPENDICULAIRE – LE GRAND DUC TNAJUEIVOFSKYEF.” Although the name of the “Grand Duke” appears to be Russian or Ukrainian at first glance, it is actually a brilliant French play on words (anacyclism). When you read the name TNAJUEIVOFSKYEF backward, the phonetic French slang phrase emerges: "FE Y K S F O V I E U J A N T" (loosely translated: "Fait kiffer de vieux jaunets"). In Old French slang, this means something like: “The pleasure of old gold coins.” The text hilariously mocks the Russian nobility living in exile in Western Europe at the time, who squandered their money in Paris. 40 x 25 cm.
