AKIRA TORIYAMA (Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture, Japan, 1955–2024). DRAGON BALL, “Namekian Frog” Anime cel attached to a drawing. Measurements: 24.5 x 26.5 cm. Production cel from the Dragon Ball universe, the famous series created by Akira Toriyama and adapted into an animated series by Toei Animation. The piece depicts a frog from the planet Namek, a secondary character who gains prominence during the battle between Goku and Captain Ginyu, when one of the body-swapping techniques triggers an unexpected transformation. Anime cels are transparent acetate sheets on which the characters and elements of each scene were hand-painted and then photographed against backgrounds to create the frames of traditional animation. These pieces serve as tangible evidence of the Japanese anime production process and have sparked considerable interest among collectors of animation and popular culture.
