OSCAR NIEMEYER (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, 1907–2012). “Sketch of the Niterói Museum of Contemporary Art.” Ink on paper. Signed in ink in the lower right corner. The paper shows creases and small stains. Measurements: 39 x 59 cm; 43 x 63 cm (frame). The drawing depicts one of Oscar Niemeyer’s most iconic creations: the Niterói Museum of Contemporary Art, designed in 1991 and inaugurated in 1996. Through an extraordinary economy of means, the architect captures the building’s unique structure, whose circular roof, elevated on a central support, evokes a flower emerging from the landscape. The composition integrates the architecture with the mountainous surroundings of Guanabara Bay, reflecting the importance Niemeyer placed on the dialogue between architecture and nature. The spontaneous line work and formal simplicity reveal his distinctive sculptural conception of architecture. A leading figure in modern Brazilian architecture, Niemeyer developed a design language based on the expressive possibilities of the curve and reinforced concrete. Among his most celebrated projects are the Cathedral and the National Congress in Brasília, as well as the Niterói Museum itself. His career was recognized with the Pritzker Prize in 1988 and the Prince of Asturias Award for the Arts in 1989. His work is represented in institutions such as MoMA in New York.
