Spanish School; 20th century. “Urban Exodus.” Mixed media on canvas mounted on wood panel. Titled on the reverse. Measurements: 120 x 150 cm; 133 x 163 cm (frame). The composition presents a panoramic view of a crowd in motion, set against a vast beige-toned surface that takes on the appearance of an undefined landscape. A diagonal white stripe cuts across the pictorial space, introducing a marked visual division and dynamism to the scene, while a red semicircle, located in the lower left corner, serves as an element of contrast and a geometric reference. Against this backdrop unfolds a large group of small, anonymous, and schematic human figures that appear to be moving collectively in different directions. The work establishes an interesting formal and thematic affinity with the pictorial universe of Juan Genovés, especially with his well-known compositions of crowds viewed from an elevated perspective. As in this artist’s work, the reduction of the human figure to small, repeated units transforms the scene into a reflection on the individual within the collective The title, *Urban Exodus*, directs our interpretation toward the phenomenon of collective displacement and the transformation of inhabited spaces. The crowd ceases to be a mere accumulation of figures and becomes the protagonist of an open narrative, in which each figure participates in a shared movement. The panoramic perspective, the simplification of elements, and the contrast between geometric forms and human presence reinforce the allegorical nature of the composition.
