NÉSTOR SANMIGUEL DIEST (Zaragoza, 1949). “The Suicide of Lucretia. Venice I,” 2000. Oil on canvas. Signed and dated on the reverse. Work exhibited in the major retrospective exhibition “The Peripeteia of the Automaton,” organized by the Reina Sofía Museum (Madrid) and the Artium Museum (Vitoria-Gasteiz), 2022 Measurements: 160 × 120 cm. Dated 2000, “The Suicide of Lucretia. Venice I" marks a decisive turning point in Néstor Sanmiguel Diest’s career: the moment he definitively left his job as an industrial patternmaker to devote himself exclusively to his artistic practice, after decades of balancing both disciplines. This convergence between technical precision and artistic freedom is manifested in this piece with exemplary clarity, articulating the core elements of his mature artistic language: the system of rules, serialization, concealment, and the graphic superimposition of layers. Superficially, the composition is dominated by an uninterrupted sequence of undulating black-and-white patterns that imbue the canvas with an intense optical vibration. However, this linear regularity—akin to textile design or a mechanical matrix—does not result in a hermetic plane. Among the bands, earthy nuances and dark hints emerge, offering glimpses of underlying layers that are immediately reabsorbed by the linear structure. The viewer’s perception thus oscillates between the overall view and the search for what remains veiled. This tension between revelation and concealment constitutes the artist’s poetic core. Far from being exercises in pure abstraction, his geometric grids function as screens of interference capable of containing, fragmenting, and displacing texts, images, and cultural historiography. The hypnotic rhythm of the waves not only disrupts immediate legibility but also prolongs the time of contemplation, making the very process of looking visible. The title evokes the suicide of Lucretia, a subject widely addressed in the history of Western art, while also incorporating a topographical resonance through Venice. However, the artist avoids any direct figurative narrative: the historical account is encoded as a latent reference within the palimpsest’s system of erasures. True to Sanmiguel Diest’s use of aphorisms and quotations, the title functions as a parallel narrative that amplifies the work’s associative possibilities without locking down its meaning. The work’s heritage and documentary value is underscored by its significant exhibition history. The painting was selected by the Reina Sofía Museum to be part of the historic monographic retrospective “La peripecia del autómata (2022)”—a project comprising some 130 works organized in collaboration with Artium Museoa—and featured as one of the exhibition’s representative images. Néstor Sanmiguel Diest is one of the most distinctive figures in Spanish contemporary art. A founding member of the historic collective A Ua Crag (1985–1996), he has developed since the 1990s a distinctive body of work in which grids, the accumulation of signs, and patterns structure complex visual palimpsests. His institutional recognition culminated in 2022 with the major solo exhibition organized jointly by the Reina Sofía Museum and Artium Museoa. His work is included in the collections of institutions such as the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía (Madrid), the MACBA (Barcelona), the Artium Museoa (Vitoria-Gasteiz), and Es Baluard Museu d’Art Contemporani (Palma).
