STEFAN BRÜGGEMANN (Mexico City, 1975). “Untitled (Faith),” 2025. Sculpture in veined black marble, with spray-paint interventions and vinyl lettering. It features the inscriptions “SEX” and “INFINITY.” Exhibition reference: SPEED, Gathering, Cologne, Germany, 2025. Measurements: 65 x 100 x 200 cm. This sculpture is part of Stefan Brüggemann’s exploration of the relationships between language, matter, and symbolism, developed through a language that combines the formal rigor of minimalism with the provocation of conceptual art. Conceived as an architectural structure, the work features an arrangement of orthogonal planes that simultaneously evokes a monumental bench and a horizontally extended cross. The forcefulness of the black marble, veined with delicate white streaks, reinforces its sculptural presence, while the geometric intersections establish a dialogue between balance, monumentality, and space. The incorporation of words such as “SEX” and “INFINITY,” along with the reference to faith contained in the title, introduces a reflection on desire, transcendence, and permanence. Brüggemann contrasts the nobility of a material traditionally associated with durability with the immediacy of spray paint and contemporary language, challenging the conventions of sculpture and its meanings. The work relates to the pieces presented in SPEED, an exhibition held at Gathering in Cologne in 2025, where the artist explored the capacity of religious symbols and minimalist structures to generate new interpretations of reality. Stefan Brüggemann is one of the most internationally renowned contemporary Mexican artists. His body of work spans painting, sculpture, installation, and conceptual art, characterized by the use of language as an instrument of cultural critique. He has exhibited at institutions such as the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the Kunsthalle Bern, the Centro Galego de Arte Contemporánea, and the National Museum of Art in Mexico, in addition to presenting solo projects at Hauser & Wirth. His work is part of prominent collections, including the MACBA in Barcelona, the Jumex Collection in Mexico, and the Kunstmuseum Bern.
