☼IVORY TRIPTYCH CARVED IN RELIEF, Early 19th century or earlier; closed: 32.5 cm (H) x 14 cm (W); open: 28.5 cm (W), Carved in bas-relief and high relief, in an architectural style with two hinged side panels, entirely decorated with scenes from the life and Passion of Christ. The upper part is crowned by a Gothic pointed pediment, adorned with pinnacles, crockets, and floral motifs, within which the Coronation of the Virgin is depicted, with Christ and Mary seated on a throne, flanked by kneeling angels and surmounted by a flying angel. The interior features a succession of sacred scenes arranged in three superimposed registers, separated by trefoil arches and Gothic-style columns, depicting episodes from the childhood of Christ, his public life, and the Passion, including the Nativity, the Entry into Jerusalem, the Last Supper, the Ascent to Calvary, the Crucifixion, and the Deposition. Catalog Notes: This work belongs to the tradition of seventeenth-century European ivory carving, characterized by the production of refined devotional objects intended for both ecclesiastical and private patronage. The persistence of Gothic models, together with the compositional characteristics and artistic language of the work, constitutes an element which, in the opinion of our specialist, supports a proposed dating to the seventeenth century, reflecting the continuity of the late medieval artistic tradition in the production of devotional objects even during the Baroque period. It should be noted that the accompanying CITES certificate lists a date from the early nineteenth century, whereas, based on stylistic and iconographic evidence, our specialist considers a seventeenth-century date more plausible. The lot is accompanied by CITES Certificate No. ITCE2026MI99228
