☼FRAME WITH IVORY RELIEF DEPICTING A SACRED SCENE FEATURING THE RISEN CHRIST, Early 19th century or earlier, h 32.5 cm x w 24 cm. A devotional composition depicting the Transfiguration of Christ on Mount Tabor. In the center, Christ appears suspended in glory, with his right hand raised in a gesture of blessing, while the figures of Moses and Elijah are positioned on either side. At the bottom, one of the apostles is depicted lying on rocky ground. Set within a rectangular frame adorned with a sequence of beads, on a crimson red velvet background. Catalog Notes: This work belongs to the refined tradition of seventeenth-century artistic production in Trapani, a period during which local artisans distinguished themselves in the creation of precious devotional objects in ivory, coral, and other materials, intended for both ecclesiastical and private patrons. The composition, depicting the Transfiguration of Christ on Mount Tabor, displays stylistic and iconographic characteristics consistent with seventeenth-century art. The arrangement of the figures on different levels, the central position of Christ radiating divine light, the dynamic treatment of the drapery, and the sculptural rendering of the clouds evoke the artistic language and theatrical sensibility characteristic of the Baroque period. Based on these elements, our specialist considers a 17th-century date plausible, within the context of production in the Trapani workshops, although the accompanying CITES certificate dates the work to the early 19th century.
