Their uniqueness lies in their exceptional chemical composition: consisting exclusively of carbon, they contain no detectable amounts of nitrogen or boron, unlike other major categories of diamonds. This remarkable purity gives them unique optical properties, exceptional clarity, and a transparency often compared to that of the clearest water. Extremely rare, Type IIa diamonds are estimated to account for only about 1 to 2% of natural diamonds used in jewelry. They are found primarily in India, Africa, Canada, and Australia. The purity of their crystalline structure is also associated with some of the diamond’s most fascinating manifestations, notably exceptional pink diamonds. When colorless, these diamonds can exhibit remarkable whiteness and achieve the highest color grades, from D to F. Among the most famous Type IIa diamonds are the Cullinan, the largest gem-quality rough diamond ever discovered (3,106 carats); the legendary Koh-i-Noor, a historic jewel of the British Crown; and the Pink Legacy, an exceptional pink diamond that has become iconic in the gemstone market. Rare, pure, and fascinating, Type IIa diamonds embody a force of nature capable of creating, in the silence of time, an almost unreal perfection.
