French school of the second half of the 17th century, after Michel Dorigny (1616-1665), after Zacharie Heince (1611-1669) and François Bignon (c.1620-c.1671) - Amphitrite and a procession of putti and nereids favorably presenting a family coat of arms to Neptune - Procession of tritons and tritonnesses carrying ewer and fruit bowl Oils on panels, forming a pair 46 x 77 cm (old horizontal fracture restored, restorations, accidents) Expert: Pierre-Antoine Martenet. Provenance : - probably acquired by Edmond Foulc (1828-1916), collector of Renaissance arts, and placed in his private mansion in Nîmes, rue Briçonnet, built in 1855. - Presumably acquired at the same time as the Hôtel Foulc, in 1908, by Armand Colomb de Daunant (1854-1942), a lawyer. - then by descent to the present day. Note: Our paintings are an interesting case of the reuse of engravings for sumptuary decoration, personalized by heraldry. Our compositions are taken from plates 1 and 4 of a cycle of twelve engravings by Michel Dorigny, based on drawings by Zacharie Heince and François Bignon, originally dedicated to Pierre Séguier (1588-1672), Chancellor of France. Copies of these engravings can be found in London (The British Museum, inv.1937,0915.433.7 and 1937,0915.433.10). Here, the coat of arms of the commissioning family has been substituted for that of the chancellor. The artist's choice to depict his coat of arms as carved in stone, making it impossible to transcribe the enamels, makes it difficult to identify this family, which nonetheless bears a rather rare piece of furniture: a "lion's encounter" (or "leopard's encounter") at the base of the shield. The choice of iconography linked to the marine world, with Neptune, tritons and nereids, could suggest that the commissioning family had a trade or office in navigation (ship fitting, harbor master's office, career in the royal navy, etc.).
