Marie Gautier (1867–1960) The Mill at Saint-Briac. Circa 1900. Etching and aquatint. 199 x 148 [323 x 220 mm]. Color print. Very fine print on Japanese paper, annotated “15 prints—No. 1,” signed in blue pencil and titled. Light foxing. Marginal crease marks. All margins intact. AABM stamp (Lugt 3075). Marie Gautier was a French painter and printmaker whose work was deeply influenced by Japonism. Beginning in the late 1880s, she became a regular customer at “L’Art japonais,” the famous Parisian shop owned by art dealer Siegfried Bing. Her work drew inspiration from Japanese prints long before the trend became widespread. This colorful influence is evident in her works depicting the coastal landscapes of Brittany around 1900 (Saint-Briac, Saint-Jean-du-Doigt, Roscoff...).
