Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (1864–1901) Mademoiselle Églantine’s Troupe. Poster. 1896. Lithograph. [805 x 620 mm]. Delteil 361; Wittrock P21. Color print. A very fine print on thin ivory-colored vellum, mounted on board, with very fresh colors. The edges are slightly oxidized. "In 1896, Jane Avril was set to perform at the Palace Theatre in London with Mademoiselle Églantine’s troupe. She commissioned the show’s poster from Toulouse-Lautrec in a letter—now preserved at the Albi Museum—in which she specified the names and order of the dancers. Lautrec worked from a photograph but did not follow his friend’s instructions. He arranged the dancers from left to right: Jane Avril slightly set apart from the other three, followed by Cléopâtre, Églantine, and Gazelle. Here we see the artist’s mastery of synthesis, transforming the reality of a photographic image into a highly graphic, flat, and linear composition.” (www.musee-toulouse-lautrec.com).
