Joseph Parrocel (1648–1704) The Mysteries of the Life of Our Lord Jesus Christ. Late 17th century. One oblong quarto volume [230 x 200 mm] containing an exceptional and likely unique set of 84 plates, probably compiled by the artist himself, including the title page of the series of 25 plates, preceded by the artist’s portrait engraved by G. F. Schmidt after H. Rigaud. Etching. Baudicour 16–40. Prints trimmed flush with the block or outside it and mounted on sheets of heavy vellum (2 loose plates); most subjects are accompanied by a print in pure etching state, some of which are retouched in gouache, in sepia ink or black chalk, as well as smaller-sized variants and 4 counter-prints, one of which is extensively reworked with a wash of brown ink. 10 prints bearing the letter engraved on a movable plate. About fifty proofs accompanied by handwritten quotations in pen from the Gospels, written on a fragment of thin paper pasted into the lower margin of the sheet. Light foxing and minor imperfections along the edges of the sheet. Bound in long-grain red half-maroquin with corner pieces, smooth spine with decoration (early 19th century), slightly worn. AABM stamp (Lugt 3075).
