KENZAN III: A FINE RED-GLAZED ‘PINE TREES’ CHAWAN (TEA BOWL) By Miyata Gosuke (Kenzan III, active c. 1818-1844), signed Kenzan Go tsukuru Japan, 19th century, late Edo period (1615-1868) Exquisitely hand-modeled, with slightly concave sides resting on a short foot and rising to a gently undulating rim. The surface entirely covered in a lustrous orange-red glaze with ash-grey patches, further enlivened by stylized pine-tree motifs painted in milky-white tones beneath the glaze. The underside signed KENZAN GO tsukuru. HEIGHT 8.2 cm, DIAMETER 10.3 cm Condition: Excellent condition. With the original wood tomobako (storage box). Miyata Gosuke was a Japanese potter active in Kyoto between 1818 and 1844, during the late Edo period. He is best known for identifying himself as the third-generation successor, Kenzan III, within the Kyoto Kyo-Kenzan lineage. His work formed part of the continued development of the Kenzan ceramic tradition in Kyoto, a tradition associated with refined decoration, painterly surface treatment, and close connections between ceramics and the pictorial arts. Museum comparison: Compare a related red-glazed Raku ware chawan with foliage decoration, possibly by Raku Tannyu, dated c. 1811-1850, 11.7 cm diameter, in the Victoria & Albert Museum, accession number 245-1877.
